  • An Atlas of Cyberspaces
    These maps of Cyberspaces - cybermaps - help us visualise and comprehend the new digital landscapes beyond our computer screen, in the wires of the global communications networks and vast online information resources. The cybermaps, like maps of the real-world, help us navigate the new information landscapes, as well being objects of aesthetic interest. They have been created by 'cyber-explorers' of many different disciplines, and from all corners of the world.

Pythonesque

2008May0621:49

So I became a python convert, though I don't have anything to say as witty as wot xkcd sed about python. And clearly I'm not the programmer that xkcd is, because I wrote two programs, not 20. In between times over the bank holiday, so probably a few hours, I wrote a script which polls the del.icio.us API and retrieves entries by date, and builds some post data ready for insertion into a local database - the (unoriginal) idea being that an automatic blog-post can be created from del.icio.us activity without extra effort. Had I built this script in PHP it would have taken a day, and if I was new to PHP, much longer. I remember parsing XML for the first time in PHP and weeping.

Python is therefore nice, I will build more things in it. I do notice however, that although there are libraries for database connectivity, the only default module available is for Berkeley DB - certainly when I polled my hosting services - and that would be as simple as:

import sys
import pprint
return pprint.pformat(sys.modules)

(and by the way that's far better than the 'magic' of phpinfo()) - there were no libraries for MySQL or PostgreSQL. No matter, the PHP and PEAR libraries for MySQL are more than adequate for building a RESTful API for db connectivity. So from now on, where possible, I think I'll build the application logic in python. Get me!

SCORM

2005Dec1719:18

Shareable Content Object Reference Model (whatis?).

An interesting question that came up at the MAG meeting in which I introduced Biblipedia was whether it would be SCORM compliant.

There are a number of aspects to this question:

  • We can provide SCORM-compliant info and metadata about Biblipedia
  • We want to talk to other databases, and it would help enormously if they were SCORM compliant
  • Biblipedia is not a 'course' as such, so that kind of metadata is not relevant
  • To what extent do we open up a public Biblipedia API to unauthenticated users?

Cath Bond dot com

Currently developing a easy-to-use content management system for an artist to showcase and document her work. This CMS will have a blog which integrates with the Flickr API to allow her to produce work for her course (eg output to PDF), create galleries, and alter navigational tools, etc, without having to do any coding or document editing at all. Here's an early implementation of the Flickr API that allows the user to choose a picture of appropriate size and link it into a blog entry.

Tapioca Balls

2002Mar0823:04

Hi Janet

How do you like these cute balls :-)

Obviously they don't have menus attached to them right now, and they do tend to overlap and wander off stage from time to time, but they are a little mindless at the moment. If you like them, we can make them avoid each other and keep them from following the pied piper off the screen...

Click here to see big Tapioca balls

Hmmm. Somebody just just told me they look like panting frogspawn, which may not be what you're after for a bubble tea site? How about these.
