postel's law and nicotine
Postel's law states that you should:
"be liberal in what you accept, and conservative in what you send."
So when you're dealing with interoperable content from third parties using standardised formats (eg RSS), then you should anticipate variations in the implementations (aka errors...) you receive from others. When you create such interoperable bits and pieces, you should however be rigorous about being right on the money in terms of standards-compliance.
It's a lovely rule in theory, and a huge pain in the arse in practice.
If you put html links (whether they're href or img src or whatever) into content that you syndicate via RSS, then obviously using relative paths for your links is just stupid. In fact, its a violation of the RSS standard, and if you validated your RSS feed, you'd know that.
So anyway, I just spent 3 hours adding some error-sniffing code to my content aggregator, which now detects if someone uses relative paths in their urls in RSS content, and fixes it for them.
At first, I thought my sheer hatred of this person who forced me to do this was due to the lunacy, the cavalier bloody-mindedness of the rank-amateur.
Actually, I realised that that isn't the case at all. I wish to add a third clause to Postel's Law:
"be liberal in what you accept, and conservative in what you send, but if you've just quit smoking, do it another day."

The Interactive Media Production Blog
The Interactive Media Production Blog is for staff and students in the Interactive Media subject group at Bournemouth Media School, as well as a public-facing site for prospective students and candidates. Most of the content is aggregated from the personal blogs of students already on the courses, using their RSS feeds. Graphic design by MAIMe student Hongy
