macs, samba and XP

2006Feb1119:11

Okay so at home I werk on a PC, and I run a linux box as a test server. I set up samba (the windows workgroup service emulator on Unix) on the linux box, so that I could talk to the network and easily edit files on the server.

After upgrading to XP (from Windows 98) a couple of years ago, I found I couldn't connect to samba any more. I googled the problem and found about a million-and-a-half resources telling me that as a default, the linux smb server accepts unencrypted passwords, while as a default, XP (unlike Win98) encrypts passwords by default. The solution, widely linked, was to get a registry key hack to make XP send unencrypted passwords. This registry key is on my bomb-proof, take-everywhere back-up disk.

So I recently got a powerbook on loan from work, took it home and found I couldn't connect to the samba server, only 'see' it. So I supposed I needed to unencrypt the password I send to the server. I google for it, a find.... NOTHING! I spent a while googling for stuff, and eventually discover that on the powerbook, I can connect fine using the terminal window on OS X tiger, but not using the pretty GUI. This doesn't help, because when I save a file, I'm using a GUI, and connecting to samba via the terminal doesn't give GUI access to it. That's bizarre...

Also I eventually discover that the only solution is to force samba to accept encrypted passwords - ie I have to change the service, not the powerbook settings. Now - okay - I've only had the Mac a week and maybe there's a solution I haven't found yet - but my point is this: the mac makes me change the third party service, it won't let me change the powerbook. Even if it does, there is no huge user community telling me how to do it, like there is for the PC.

Seems to me symptomatic of the Apple mindset: our hardware, no licensing. Our adaptation of a format - everyone else can fuck off. No fucking with the Mac, go hack something else.

I noted that after OS X, it was reported that a lot of hackers switched from linux to tiger because it was based on BSD, but even then, this is a tiny community whose resources are not widespread on the web. For podcasters, iTunes' adoption of the RSS feed format brought a bunch of proprietary stuff tied to that specific client, which forced us all to start using the apple namespace stuff.

Apple make cute toys, but they really aren't interested in users and developers partying together.

All that said, I like my new jukebox :)
